Membership categories
NZSTI awards membership based on qualifications and experience. Full and Affiliate membership is awarded for specific interpreting and/or translation language pairs, as shown on their online directory profile. Note that members may hold different membership categories for their interpreting and/or translation language pairs.
The membership categories are:
Full Member
Persons with a high level of certified and validated competency in either translating or interpreting in their chosen language pairs.
Affiliate
Persons who do not meet the criteria for full member status. Generally affiliates will have attended part-time or shorter training courses to obtain qualifications in translation and/or interpreting studies or have validated competency in either translating or interpreting.
Student
Persons who are currently studying at a tertiary institution in New Zealand (confirmed by providing a paid fees invoice for the current semester). Student membership is for a period of two years only, after which the member becomes an observer of NZSTI or, if they meet the requirements, may apply to become a full member or affiliate. Students are not considered to be qualified active practitioners and therefore may not describe themselves as a 'translator' or 'interpreter'. Current members of NZSTI may not downgrade their membership to Student. Observers may switch their membership to Student if they meet the criteria.
Observer
Persons who have an interest in the society and profession but do not meet the criteria for either full member or affiliate status. This category is also suitable for T&I trainers. Observers are not considered to be qualified active practitioners and therefore may not describe themselves as a 'translator' or 'interpreter'.
The categories of fellow, retired and honorary member are conferred at the discretion NZSTI’s national council.
