Applying for NZSTI membership based on experience
NZSTI membership is generally awarded based on qualifications and certifications only. However, applications based solely on experience may still be considered. You must first complete the online application form, then email or post your supporting documents to NZSTI. If you are an existing member of NZSTI, you can find details on how to apply to upgrade your membership here.
Below are the supporting documents you will need to provide, depending on your experience (one or more of the following categories):
Published work
- ISBN, title, author and number of pages
- Scan of cover and page showing translator’s name
Self-employed
- Detailed, itemised logbook covering the past 10 (Full Member) or 7 (Affiliate) years or longer, showing full-time work as a translator (number of words translated) or interpreter (hours of interpreting worked)
- 3 work references
Employee
- Detailed work reference from each employer covering the past 5 (Full Member) or 3 (Affiliate) years or longer, stating the total hours worked for that employer and the number of those hours worked as a translator or interpreter. For translators, it should also state the total number of words translated while employed by that employer.
NZSTI is currently developing a template logbook, which will be made available on this page once finalised.
Note that any information you provide will be kept confidential and used solely for the purpose of assessing your application for membership.
