Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori 2021

‘Kia kaha te reo Māori’.

Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori (Māori Language Week) emerged from the Māori Language petition to Parliament on 14 September 1972. Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori is now an annual celebration of Māori language on the anniversary of the Petition. The theme for this year 2021 is ‘Kia kaha te reo Māori’ (Let’s make the Māori language strong).

In support of Māori Language Week 2021, the Komiti Māori of NZSTI will be hosting a free open workshop for NZSTI members on any questions they have about Te Reo Māori and Tikanga Māori, on Wednesday 15 September 7-8pm. The workshop facilitators are NZSTI Council members Te Tumatakuru O’Connell and Ceci Titulaer. All members are welcome to attend. Learn about Māori Tikanga (culture) and Reo (language) and ask all those patai (questions) that intrigue you.

This year the Māori Language Commission is encouraging everyone to join them for their Māori Language Moment on 14 September 2021 to celebrate te reo from wherever you are, in whatever way you want (please register and find out more at www.reomaori.co.nz).

Key points for Māori Language Week 2021 are:

  • Te Wiki o te reo Māori will be held from 13 September – 19 September 2021
  • Last year more than 1 million people joined in for the Māori Language Moment. This year the goal is 2 million, hopefully setting a world record.
  • It takes one generation to lose a language and three to get it back: the countdown is on to create 1 million speakers by 2040.

Kia kaha te reo Māori.
