Overcoming Challenges  ●  Creating Harmony

NZSTI is pleased to announce that the national conference will be held in Christchurch, New Zealand, on 16-17 September 2023. This year’s gathering promises to be an interesting and exciting in-person event, filled with delightful surprises and inspiring talks.

Under the theme Overcoming Challenges ● Creating Harmony, we will focus on the vital role translators and interpreters play in reconciling differences by exploring how culture shapes people’s views, values, behaviours and worries, as well as their hopes and dreams. Appreciation of cultural diversity is key to successful communication and goes hand-in-hand with an accurate rendition of intentions in the translation and interpreting processes.

How do we balance having a foot in each culture and maintaining an equilibrium when being pulled in different directions? By considering the perspectives of non-mainstream groups, these issues can be explored in terms of professional practice (research, translation and interpreting) and new light can be shed on challenging problems.

Each cultural group offers unique strengths and perspectives from which the wider community can benefit. By bridging the gaps, we are supporting diversity, restoring harmony, reconciling people, and connecting cultures, mindsets and systems. Even though each person sees the world differently, at the end of the day we all want the same thing: to live peacefully in a just and equitable society that we understand and trust, and which understands and trusts us in return.
