Local events hosted by NZSTI branches around the country and open to everyone

NZSTI has three local branches: Auckland, Wellington and Canterbury (Christchurch). These branches play a key role in serving our members in those areas by organising local in-person events throughout the year (presentations, social events, and more). These provide an opportunity for NZSTI members to come together, discuss industry-related issues and questions, and connect with colleagues.

While most branch events are for members only, the branches also organise events open to non-members, which offer a great opportunity for T&I professionals and students to discover NZSTI and meet others working in the industry.

You must be logged in to register for events and access discounted prices (if applicable). If you do not yet have an NZSTI account, please create one before registering, by following this helpful guide.

Entitlement note holders are subsidised by MBIE to register for a maximum of 2 CI test preparation workshops free of charge.

By booking this ONE workshop, you are registering for THREE HALF-DAY sessions and ONE TWO HOUR session.

Register for this NAATI Certified Interpreter test preparation workshop to find out what to expect during the test and to brush up on the skills you will be tested on.

This is an online workshop that is split into three half-day sessions of four hours each plus a final two-hour session. Participants need to attend all sessions to complete the workshop. Each session will cover the following:

Sight Translation

This workshop will cover the required skills for sight translation as well as its main elements and challenges. Participants will learn techniques and strategies used in this mode. There will be practical exercises and participants will be able to practice sight translation. The NAATI test sight translation task will be covered in detail as will performance expectations.

Chuchotage

This workshop will cover some of the theory underpinning chuchotage and basic simultaneous interpreting techniques. Participants will learn about chuchotage in community settings as well as the challenges and strategies for this mode of interpreting. There will be practical exercises and participants will be able to practice chuchotage. The NAATI test chuchotage task will be covered in detail as will performance expectations.

Consecutive monologue

This workshop will cover consecutive monologues, particularly note taking as it is used in community interpreting. Participants will learn about the principles of effective notetaking, as well as note-taking strategies to support retention. There will be practical exercises and participants will be able to practice notetaking. The NAATI test consecutive monologue task will be covered in detail as will performance expectations.

CI Test Preparation

This is a short 2 hour session to discuss the NAATI CI test as a whole, and the dialogue tasks in particular.

This workshop is aimed at people who have met the minimum training required by NAATI and who are therefore eligible to sit for a NAATI CI test. Do not enroll for the test preparation workshop while you are still doing your tertiary training course.

We will be regularly running this CI test preparation workshop throughout the year.

This workshop is designed to support interpreters in achieving the new certification requirement, meaning that those who have received an entitlement note from MBIE may attend this workshop free of charge. You must upload your entitlement note to your NZSTI profile and enter your NAATI application reference number (first create a profile if you are not yet a member) before registering for the event in order to be able to attend free of charge.

There is a maximum of 21 participants per workshop. Due to the limited numbers, registrations will initially only be open to interpreters holding an entitlement note and preference will be given to those whose NAATI test date is in the next few months.

The zoom link and all relevant information will be emailed to you prior to the first workshop. Please ensure you check your spam folder if you have not received that email. If you cannot see the email in your inbox or spam folder, please email info@nzsti.org (weekdays only) for assistance.
