MBIE compulsory module: ‘Interpreting in Aotearoa New Zealand: The Public Sector Context’

30 Sep 2022

Tēnā koutou,

MBIE is delighted to announce the launch of our compulsory module “Interpreting in Aotearoa New Zealand: The Public Sector Context”. This was previously called the ‘induction module’ and must be completed, alongside achieving NAATI certification, by all interpreters intending to work in the New  Zealand Public Sector from 1 July 2024.

Please note the module:

  • is hosted on the NAATI Learn Platform for your convenience
  • needs to be completed by 1 July 2024 – no need to rush
  • describes the context of the Aotearoa New Zealand public sector
  • provides information on the history of language in Aotearoa New Zealand and of Te Reo Māori words commonly used in English conversation
  • will take you around an hour to complete and there are self-tests along the way
  • does not need to be completed in a single session
  • contains a number of useful links and you may find it useful to revisit those

The module is:

  • not part of your NAATI credential – it is additional
  • not optional
  • not limited to interpreters resident in New Zealand – any interpreters including those in Australia are required to complete this module if they are doing work in the New Zealand Public Sector from 1 July 2024.
  • not limited to interpreters who are undergoing the transition to NAATI Certification

You can access the module by clicking on this link:
https://learn.naati.com.au/course/view.php?id=291

If you do not already have a NAATI Learn account, you will have received an email from lms-noreply@naati.com.au containing temporary login details.

When you have completed the module you will receive a Certificate of Completion. Please retain that Certificate as you may need to show it to your Language Services Provider or Public Sector Agency after 1 July 2024. Your Certificate of Completion contains a QR code that can be used by agencies to check the authenticity of the Certificate.

The module has been extensively tested and we hope that you will find it both helpful and enjoyable, and that it may inspire you to keep on learning and contributing to on-going development of the outstanding profession of interpreting in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Kia pai te rā

Alison McDonald
