Source language, target language and legal language: How to grapple with legal terminology as a translator or interpreter

Legal jargon and concepts are a challenging mystery to most people even in their own language, let alone when we have to convey these terms and ideas in a second language, which can be an incredibly daunting task. This workshop aims to provide both translators and interpreters with some starting foundations on how to approach such terminology.

In this session we will examine some of the key challenges in this area, including how New Zealand’s legal system broadly functions, common misconceptions around the law, and the culture and legal culture of both source and target languages.

We will also discuss easy to understand examples and explanations of commonly used terms, specifically in the areas of the criminal, family and employment law, and brainstorm how these could best be transferred into your LOTE.

The aim is for you to leave the session with a toolbox of useful understandings, concepts and resources to draw on the next time you approach legal terminology in the New Zealand context.

This webinar will not be recorded and we strongly suggest you attend so you can actively participate in the discussion and activities.
