This will be an insightful session examining common errors made by automated translation systems. The session will primarily focus on translations between English and French, with some examples in German. French and English were selected due to the presenter’s familiarity with these languages, but no prior knowledge of French is required to benefit from the discussion. We’ll be exploring MT’s tendencies to:
- mistranslate idiomatic phrases that shouldn’t be taken literally;
- choose improbable meanings in ambiguous sentences;
- fail to accurately translate technical terms with precise meanings.
Additionally, we’ll touch on findings from the French professional body of audiovisual translators ((ATAA), highlighting similar issues identified in the French subtitles of English-language films. This work gained attention in the French newspaper Libération in December 2024.
No preparation is needed—just come ready to explore the interesting quirks of automated translation systems!
