Communication in medical emergencies and within intensive care units (ICUs) is often complex, high-stakes, and emotionally charged. For families of critically ill patients, clear and compassionate communication is essential, and when language barriers exist, the role of translators and interpreters becomes vital.

In this webinar, Intensive Care and Flight Retrieval Nurse Kathy Hughes (Ngāti Kahungunu ki te Wairoa, Rakaipaaka) will share her experience working in Aotearoa’s ICUs and on flight retrievals. Kathy will discuss how Tikanga Māori applies in these environments, offering insights into cultural protocols, terminology, and communication styles that shape care in high-pressure medical settings.

The session will explore how clinicians approach “breaking bad news,” the language used in moments of crisis, and strategies interpreters and translators can use to navigate these sensitive interactions while maintaining professionalism and whānau-centred care.

You can join us live or watch the recording at a later date. Please note: the recording will only be provided to registered participants.

The Zoom link will be sent to registered participants one day before the event. If you have not received the link, please email [email protected] for assistance (during business hours on weekdays only). Please check your spam email first.
