Book translation is a unique area of professional translation that requires sustained engagement with long-form text, combining careful research, cultural understanding, stylistic consistency, creativity, and close collaboration with publishers, editors, and authors. While every project is different, book translators also face practical questions around contracts, royalties, finding work, managing projects, and navigating emerging technologies such as AI.
Join translators Ruth Diver, Jana Grohnert, and Nicola Thayil for a panel discussion exploring the realities of working in book translation. Drawing on their experiences translating award-winning fiction, children's literature, cookbooks and non-fiction, they will discuss how book translation projects are commissioned, how relationships with publishers develop, and what happens behind the scenes from manuscript to publication.
The discussion will also explore research techniques, localisation, working with editors and authors, building professional networks, fair remuneration, and the role of AI in translation. Panellists will share practical examples from their own work and discuss some of the challenges that fiction and non-fiction book translators encounter, including balancing creativity with commercial realities and working with emotionally demanding material.
