Held during NZSL week, this webinar explores the linguistic foundations of New Zealand Sign Language and what makes it a rich and dynamic language. Rather than focusing only on vocabulary, this session will examine how NZSL works at a structural level, including grammar, use of space, non-manual features, and the visual modality that shapes meaning.
The webinar will be presented by Daniel Hanks, President of SLIANZ and a highly experienced NZSL interpreter, educator, and service provider. With decades of experience in interpreting practice, training, and service development, Daniel has played a key role in shaping professional standards and advancing interpreting services in Aotearoa.
Drawing on his experience, Daniel will provide an accessible introduction to the linguistic principles that underpin NZSL and how these compare to spoken languages. He will also reflect on why recognising NZSL as a complete linguistic system matters for both practitioners and the wider community.
This event is particularly relevant for translators, interpreters, linguistics students, and language practitioners who want to deepen their understanding of language as a system. Beyond NAATI points, attendees will gain a broader linguistic lens that can enrich their professional practice and intercultural awareness.
