How do you translate an iconic animated film into te reo Māori—while capturing its humour, meaning, and cultural nuance?

Join us for an interesting webinar exploring the creative process behind dubbing Shrek into te reo Māori. This special session features Kaimoni Soutar, one of the talented translators on the project Shrek: Kātahi te korokē!, who will take us behind the scenes of what it took to adapt this beloved story for Aotearoa audiences.

We’ll discuss the linguistic and cultural decisions involved in bringing the characters to life in te reo Māori, from selecting vocabulary to navigating tone, rhythm, and humour. Kaimoni will share what made the project so memorable, the challenges the team faced, and how this mahi supports te reo Māori revitalisation through mainstream media.

Whether you're a translator curious about audiovisual translation or simply love seeing te reo Māori on the big screen, this webinar promises a fun and thought-provoking hour with a storyteller passionate about reo, community, and connection.

You can join us live or watch the recording at a later date. Please note: the recording will only be provided to registered participants.

The Zoom link will be sent to registered participants one day before the event. If you have not received the link, please email [email protected] for assistance (during business hours on weekdays only). Please check your spam email first.

This event is eligible for PD points according to the NAATI recertification catalogue category 1.6.
