Navigating healthcare in a foreign country is already a daunting experience but having a baby in a completely different system, far from your trusted network of family and friends, can be a terrifying prospect. Interpreters are taught to be impartial, provide precise and accurate communication, and be emotionally detached. However, interpreting in the maternity setting can challenge these rules and even lead interpreters to reconsider their values and beliefs or reevaluate their personal and professional ethics.
As a midwife and a former medical interpreter, Lucia will guide you through the complexities of interpreting in the maternity setting in New Zealand, providing you with tools to be mentally prepared and make important decisions regarding your response to a range of expected and unexpected situations that may arise during your work as an interpreter. Lucia will also share some of the joys and tears that come with working in one of the most emotional, fulfilling and rewarding areas of healthcare.
