10 NAATI recertification points
What do you need to know to recognise and respond to family violence? How can you support someone safely and appropriately if they disclose their experience?
This online education session provides an entry-level overview of family violence in Aotearoa New Zealand. Delivered by Dr Emma Barker-Clarke from Shine RESPOND, the session covers key legislation, prevalence, and definitions, alongside unpacking common myths about family violence. Participants will also explore how to respond effectively to people experiencing violence and gain a clearer understanding of help-seeking pathways and referral options.
The webinar will be presented by Dr Emma Barker-Clarke, a Senior Trainer with Shine RESPOND, part of Shine (Safer Homes in NZ Everyday). She delivers family violence education across Aotearoa, supporting practitioners to recognise, respond, and refer safely and effectively using evidence-based frameworks.
This event is free to attend thanks to funding from Shine’s contract with Oranga Tamariki. Due to high interest, registrations have now closed. Attendance is limited to 20 participants, with places allocated on a first come, first served basis. We are currently exploring the option of offering a second session and will share an update if this goes ahead.
This session is relevant for translators, interpreters, students, and anyone working in community, health, legal, or social service environments where they may encounter people affected by family violence. Attendees will gain foundational knowledge, build confidence in recognising signs of harm, and understand how to respond in a safe and appropriate way within their role.
This is a live session and will not be recorded due to the nature of the topic.
The Zoom link will be sent to registered participants one day before the event. If you have not received the link, please email [email protected] for assistance (during business hours on weekdays only). Please check your spam email first.
This event is eligible for 10 PD points according to the NAATI recertification catalogue, under the Ethics sub-category 2.20
Registration for this event will close at 11.59 pm on Monday, 1 June 2026
