10 NAATI recertification points
Have you ever wondered what structural reform for professional recognition and improvements to pay and conditions could look like for translators and interpreters in Aotearoa? How can the sector strengthen standards and working conditions while maintaining the role of credentialing systems such as NAATI?
In this webinar, Professionals Australia will introduce the union’s proposed Workforce Code for translators and interpreters through a pre recorded presentation, followed by a live Q&A session. The presentation will outline how a workforce code could support professional recognition, quality standards, remuneration, and working conditions across the language services sector.
Professionals Australia is a national union representing professionals across a range of sectors, including translators and interpreters. The organisation advocates for fair pay, sustainable career pathways, and stronger professional standards through collective advocacy and structural reform.
In Australia, fair pay and working conditions are typically protected through industrial systems, yet translators and interpreters have historically had limited access to these protections. In recognition of the role governments play in shaping the sector, particularly where price driven procurement can undermine professional standards, Professionals Australia has developed a proposal for reform at government procurement level.
The presentation will also explore how union advocacy for professional standards and working conditions differs from the role of credentialing bodies such as NAATI, and how NAATI credentials fit within the Workforce Code and broader union campaigns.
Attendees will gain a clearer understanding of what a workforce code is, what it aims to achieve, and how it differs from industry regulation and industrial instruments. The webinar also aims to broaden discussion about professional identity, collective organisation, and what future workforce models could look like for translators and interpreters in the New Zealand context.
