10 NAATI recertification points

Interpreters often work in high‑emotion environments where tensions can escalate quickly. This practical workshop introduces the principles of de‑escalation, helping interpreters recognise rising tension and respond in ways that promote calm, safety, and effective communication.
You’ll learn how to read verbal and non‑verbal cues, maintain situational awareness, manage your own responses, and use communication techniques that reduce defensiveness and build rapport.

These skills are especially valuable in frontline public sector and healthcare settings, such as police interactions, courts, social services, and hospitals.

The workshop is led by Glen Cooper, Emergency Response, Health and Safety Lead at Tū Ora Compass Health, who brings over 20 years of experience with New Zealand Police, including leading the Hutt Valley Family Harm Team and developing national training programmes for detectives at the Royal New Zealand Police Academy.

Stay on after the session for drinks and nibbles. This will be a relaxed chance to connect, share experiences, and continue the conversation with colleagues.

This event is open to all and eligible for 10 NAATI recertification points.

Interpreting New Zealand (INZ) interpreters are encouraged to join us in this learning and networking opportunity. Come along and find out more about our branch activities.

Registration will close at 11.59 pm on 25 May 2026.
