Join NZSTI Canterbury Branch for a special reach-out event in Otago. This in-person session is designed for NZSTI members, translators and interpreters (T&I), and anyone interested in the T&I profession.
We’ll begin with a brief introduction to NZSTI and the work we do to support practitioners across Aotearoa. The event will then feature a professional development session on vicarious trauma—an important topic for community interpreters, particularly those working in legal, healthcare, refugee, and crisis settings.
You’ll learn what vicarious trauma is, how it differs from burnout, and how repeated exposure to emotionally intense content can impact interpreters’ wellbeing. The session will offer practical strategies to build resilience, maintain boundaries, and implement realistic self-care practices, as well as ideas on how agencies and clients can better support interpreters in high-stress environments.
This interactive and reflective session is also an opportunity to connect with fellow South Island practitioners, share best practices, and discuss how we can strengthen collaboration across regional branches. Let’s make this trip south count and continue building a stronger, smarter, and more connected T&I community across the motu.
No registration required—bring along friends, colleagues, whānau and anyone curious about the T&I profession. Free to attend.
The event is free to attend. Light catering will be provided.
