This webinar is dedicated to new practitioners in the T&I industry wanting to find out more on how to set up in business and effectively communicate with agencies and clients, based on real-life experiences.

The webinar will be divided in three parts:

  • Starting out as a Freelance Translator - presentation delivered by a recent graduate from The University of Western Australia, on the steps she took to start her own translation business. This will include insights on becoming a sole trader, choosing a business name, creating a logo and using social media. It will also include tips on how to spend your time - not just translating or interpreting, but also managing other business-related activities, such as marketing, admin and invoicing, CPD…and generally, how to stay organised to meet deadlines!

  • Interpreting in the Real World -  A panel discussion, taking in the viewpoints of practitioners and Language Service Providers (LSPs). What is the best way to contact agencies? What are the common pitfalls experienced by new interpreters in community settings? How can you effectively establish professional standing with clients and other professionals?  Hear from an agency owner and experienced practitioners in a range of languages on how they navigated the 'do’s and don’ts' of the profession and learned to deal with commonly-experienced difficulties.

  • Building your Network - discussion on the importance of feeling part of 'something bigger', in this case the T&I profession. All panellists will contribute, covering how they established relationships with their colleagues, who they turn to for advice and how they seek support.
