10 NAATI recertification points
In this fascinating presentation, experienced translator John Jamieson explores AI-generated text through a social, historical and philosophical lens. Drawing on his reflections on language and translation, he outlines three key phases: the “individual as part of a community,” the “individual,” and the emerging “post-individual” phase.
John suggests that AI-generated texts can be seen as the ultimate example of the post-individual phase. We have no idea of what individuals might be involved, and there is very little truth value. Our imagination must now be deployed not to discover, but to manufacture, the individual entities within the text.
John poses a very interesting question: Are we equal to that task? Come and find out!
John Jamieson is a founding member of NZSTI and a highly experienced translator based in Wellington. With a background in French and Russian and decades of experience across government and private sector translation, he brings both practical expertise and thoughtful reflection on how languages work.
This event will be relevant for translators, interpreters, students, and anyone interested in how AI is reshaping language work. Attendees will gain a deeper perspective on how to approach AI-generated texts, reflect on their own practice, and consider how their role is evolving in a changing professional landscape.
You can join us in person at Toi Pōneke Arts Centre.
This event is free and eligible for NAATI recertification points.
Registration for this event will close at 11.59 pm on Tuesday, 28 April 2026.
