Last month, the Australian Judicial Council on Cultural Diversity launched the second edition of its ‘Recommended National Standards for Working with Interpreters in Courts and Tribunals’. This is an invaluable contribution to the interpreting industry, and to social justice in Australia.

NAATI’s CEO, Mark Painting, was pleased to be part of a panel discussion on the night, alongside the Hon. Shannon Fentiman (Queensland Attorney-General and Minister for Justice), the Hon. Helen Bowskill (Chief Justice of Queensland), and the Hon. Justice Melissa Perry (Federal Court of Australia).

Even if you are not part of the legal profession, the standards are worth a look to learn more about engaging with interpreters, using plain English to communicate clearly and to discover a four-part test to determine the need for an interpreter.
