10 NAATI recertification points
Interpreting is a crucial bridge in healthcare communication, but in some situations, it may not be enough to fully support patients. As healthcare systems grow increasingly complex, many patients—especially those with limited English proficiency (LEP)—struggle to navigate care effectively. While interpreters ensure linguistic access, patient navigators provide next-level support, guiding patients through the healthcare system, addressing cultural barriers, and ensuring continuity of care.
This webinar will be delivered by Cindy Roat, a leading expert in healthcare interpreting and language access. We will explore the key differences and intersections between interpreters and patient navigators, drawing from the groundbreaking Seattle Children’s Hospital Patient Navigation Program.
Cindy will share how this program significantly improved healthcare outcomes, reduced hospital costs, and strengthened provider-patient confidence. We will then discuss how we could empower certified interpreters to take on a more proactive role in supporting at-risk families here in Aotearoa New Zealand.
This will be an essential session for interpreters, healthcare professionals, and language access advocates—gain valuable insights into when and why patient navigation may be a better choice and how both roles can work together to enhance patient care and equity in healthcare settings.
This event is open to all and eligible for 10 NAATI recertification points, offering valuable professional development for those seeking to meet their annual recertification requirements.
You can join us live or watch the recording at a later date. Please note that the recording will only be provided to registered participants.
The Zoom link will be sent to registered participants one day before the event. If you have not received the link, please email info@nzsti.org for assistance (during business hours on weekdays only). Please check your spam email first.
